About the WV Ethics Commission

The WV Ethics Commission was created in 1989 to implement and enforce a code of ethical conduct enacted by the Legislature for public servants. (WV Code 6B-1-1,et seq.) In 1999 the Ethics Commission was also given the responsibility of issuing advisory opinions on the Open Governmental Meetings Law (WV Code 6-9A-1 through 12).

The Commission consists of twelve members appointed to five year terms by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate. The commission meets monthly, generally on the first Thursday, and is supported by a small full time staff (an executive director, part-time legal counsel, and administrative secretary). Investigators are hired on a contractual basis as needed.
